Why CPEG
This is Computer Engineering!
We are in the information age and computers and their applications are at its heart! Technologies such as the World Wide Web, mobile communication, networking, information processing and modern banking all depend vitally on computers and are changing the way we live, work and do business. A key to the development of these technologies from both hardware and software aspects has been Computer Engineering.

The Discipline
Computer Engineering focuses on the analysis, design, implementation, and utilization of computer systems, from embedded microprocessors, notebook/desktop computers to supercomputers. It bridges the gap between computer science and electronic engineering and is the link between software and hardware. The emphasis of computer engineering is placed on deep understanding of both hardware and software and their cross-interaction in order to design cutting-edge and advanced electronic and computer systems. Like all other engineering disciplines, Computer Engineering is a practical field intended to solve real world problems, combining ideas from engineering, basic sciences, with economics, and sociology.

The Challenge
There is an increasing need worldwide for people with skills in Computer Engineering, as well as in related technologies, to solve existing problems and develop new applications for the information age. The BEng programme in Computer Engineering is designed to prepare students for this challenge.

Computer Engineering at HKUST
Computer Engineering (CPEG) at HKUST is jointly administered and taught by the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering (ECE) and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) bringing you the best of both worlds. Industry-sponsored undergraduate projects and internship programs, lasting from two months to a full year, give students direct exposure to real-world issues. Exchange programs are available from more than 20 eminent international institutions. The student will get balanced training on both hardware and software skills, plus structuring and engineering aspects of computer-based system. The degree offered after successful completion of the programme is Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Engineering.

CPEG Faculty
Computer Engineering's elite faculty produce world-class research. Several are editors of top international academic journals. All are dedicated to ensuring that students receive a caring and challenging education - the essential prerequisite to a rewarding career.

Career Opportunities
Career opportunities span both software and hardware knowledge as well as any areas involving applications of information and communication technology with good starting salary. Graduates are encouraged to start their own companies under university's R&D Corp Entrepreneurship Program, and faculty have excellent connections with major companies locally, regionally and internationally.
